Officers at the scene took many photographs to document what had happened. The coroner believed Nikki’s body to be so badly damaged that they didn’t allow the family to see the body. The family later found out that Nikki had been driving at close to 100mph when she clipped another vehicle, tumbled over the median, and smashed into a concrete tollbooth. But Christos recognized a hubcap, barely attached, and collapsed onto the pavement. When Christos arrived at the accident site, a crane was lifting the remains of a car so crumpled it was hard to tell what it had been. The accident was so severe that Nikki’s head was almost completely torn from her shoulders. As he waited on hold, two police cars rushed past him, sirens blaring, headed towards the toll road. Lesli quickly phoned Christos, who started driving around to try and find his daughter while simultaneously calling 911. When Lesli called out to her, Nikki looked away and accelerated out of the cul-de-sac. Nikki was not allowed to drive that car, but she took it anyway.
